Tommaso seeking 2 members for a scientific expedition to Vatnajokull Glacier, Iceland

Join a TeamBelinda Kirk

I am Tommaso: biologist, ultra endurance athlete and world record holder for the most 113km triathlons done on consecutive days (71).

I am organising a scientific expedition to cross the Vatnajokull glacier, the largest icecap in Europe, by ski and sled.

Date:  April 2025

Duration: 10 to 15 days

To be more specific we’ll cross the glacier with sky and sled, west to east, in the fastest time possible (10 to 15 days), taking time to collect samples of ice and geothermal source in the inner part of the glacier, samples that will be analyzed in search of bacteria and other organisms.

We will provide information to microbiologists regarding the impact of climate change and the subsequent survival of bacteria in this extreme environment.

The route is about 180km in one of the most extreme environments in the world, using only sky, sled and willpower (temperatures can reach -20C even in spring!)

No-waste and Reuse are keywords for this expedition: we really want to perform with already used materials, homemade expedition food made with expiring food, and a good old romantic approach to the adventure.

I am looking for 2-3 teammates:

a good cardiovascular fitness level and sense of humor are mandatory requirements.

More specifically I’m looking for:

-a member with previous experience in polar expeditions, glacier’s crossing, high altitude mountaineering or sky-alpinism that is able to read the terrain

-a videomaker willing to document the expedition

Any age or sex is ok (preferably Europe based).
